AND WHEN I GOT ELECTED IN 72 CITY GOVERNMENT, COUNTY STATE SUPERINTENDENTS, HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATORS DIDN'T LOOK LIKE THE PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM. JUDSON ROBINSON WAS THE ONLY CITY COUNCIL MEMBER OF COLOR. NO AFRICAN AMERICAN COUNTY COMMISSIONER OR CONGRESSMAN BARBARA JORDAN HAD TO DECIDE, YOU WANNA GO TO CONGRESS OR BACK TO THE CITY, BUT WE'RE NOT GONNA DRAW BOTH DURING THE 71 REDISTRICTING. SHE CHOSE CONGRESS. WE WENT 10 YEARS WITHOUT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN STATE SENATOR IN THIS GREAT CITY. SO MY POINT IS, WE'VE COME A LONG WAY NOW. WE HAVE DIVERSE REPRESENTATION AT EVERY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT AT THE CITY, AT THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT. BUT LET ME TELL YOU THE WORK AND WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DISCUSS TODAY, THE ECONOMIC PATH. I'VE SAID THIS ACROSS MY DISTRICT FOR YEARS AND YEARS. DON'T BE FULL BECAUSE THEY GIVE US SOME DISTRICTS THAT ARE DIVERSE, BUT THEY'RE HOLDING ONTO THAT ECONOMIC PATH. LOOK WHO GETS THE CONTRACTS. WELL, LET'S GO UP TO THE STATE THAT I'M SO FAMILIAR WITH. 'CAUSE WE'RE KICKING TAIL IN THE CITY OF HOUSTON WITH THE DIVERSITY TEAM THAT I HAVE HERE TODAY. SO HE BRANCHED OUT AND HE TALKED TO, UM, SOME HAIRCARE COMPANIES AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT, I CAN GET YOU IN EVERY STORE IN THE COUNTRY. AND THEY SAID, OKAY. SO HE STARTED TO GO OUT AND TALK TO THESE STORES, WHICH MEANS HE GOTTA BUY THE PRODUCT, GET THE PRODUCT OUT, HE'S GONNA DO IT FOR PENNIES ON A DOLLAR. BRIGHT IS MY UNCLE, AND, UH, HE CONVINCED ME TO COME HERE, HOUSTON, TO HELP HIM WITH EXPANDING THE CHURCH. SO I LANDED IN 2000. AND WHAT I FOUND WHEN I GOT HERE WAS A, UH, CHURCH THAT NEEDED RESTRUCTURING A CHURCH AND A MINISTRY THAT WAS REALLY ABOUT THEMSELVES IN TERMS OF RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE BANKING COMMUNITY. THEY REALLY DIDN'T HAVE 'EM. UH, THEY HAD, UH, A RETAIL BANK THAT THEY HAD DONE, UH, BANKING WITH FOR A NUMBER OF DECADES, BUT THEY REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BANK. MOST IMPORTANTLY, INTERNALLY, THE PEOPLE THAT WERE CHARGED WITH FINANCING THE NEW BUILDING, UH, THEY WERE CLUELESS ABOUT BANKING. SO PASTOR WRIGHT ASKED ME, HE SAID, WHO DO YOU WANT TO WORK WITH, THE TRUSTEES OR THE FINANCE COMMITTEE? AND I SAID, NEITHER OF 'EM. UH, AND HE ASKED ME, HE SAID, WELL, WHY DO YOU, HOW'D YOU GET TO THAT CONCLUSION? I SAID, WELL, IF THEY'VE BEEN, UH, IN THE STREETS FOR OVER FIVE YEARS TRYING TO FIND FINANCING, UH, I WOULD CHARACTERIZE THEM AS LOSERS, AND WE NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WITHIN THE MINISTRY THAT UNDERSTANDS BANKING. UM, AND I ATTRIBUTE MOST OF THAT TO, AGAIN, HAVING SOMEONE THAT SPOKE THE LANGUAGE THAT THE BANKERS UNDERSTOOD, AND THEN ALSO KNEW WHAT WOULD BE MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL IN TERMS OF A DEAL. IT'S BEEN A CONSTANT THING TODAY THAT YOU SHOULD BE SHOPPING BANKS AND KNOWING WHICH INSTITUTION WAS OPEN TO COMMERCIAL LENDING, ESPECIALLY TO A CHURCH, WHICH IS A VERY UNIQUE SITUATION. MOST BANKS DON'T WANT TO CLOSE AND FORECLOSE ON A CHURCH. SO THERE WERE ONLY A FEW OF THEM THAT WERE DOING THOSE DEALS. SURE, SURE. SO WE FOUND, UH, THE RIGHT BANK. AT THAT TIME, IT WAS COMERICA. AND, AND IT WAS IN THAT MOMENT WHERE I REALIZED EVEN MORE SO THAT, THAT THE, UH, THE STRENGTH OF THE RELATIONSHIP, UH, ESPECIALLY AS IT RELATES TO FINANCE, UH, IN YOUR ONGOING ACTIVITIES, THE STRENGTH OF THAT RELATIONSHIP DOES MAKE THE DIFFERENCES TO WHETHER OR NOT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SURVIVE, UH, IN DOWNTURNS. UH, HISTORICALLY WE'VE RELIED, UH, SOLELY ON, UH, ON PUBLIC FINANCING, UH, THROUGH OUR, UH, CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENTS.
