UM, THIS IS MY FIRST, UM, TIME WORKING IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SPACE, BUT I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
SO I WANTED TO COME AND TALK TO YOU GUYS TODAY BECAUSE GENERALLY I LOVE WORKING WITH YOUTH, ESPECIALLY YOUTH WHO ARE, UM, TAKING LEADERSHIP ROLES IN THEIR COMMUNITY.
UM, BUT I ALSO HEARD THAT YOU GUYS DID HAVE AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE, SO I GOT VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT, AND I WANTED TO COME AND TALK TO YOU GUYS BRIEFLY TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT EDF AND ABOUT THE WORK THAT I DO, AND, UM, KIND OF, UH, DISCUSS SOME POTENTIAL WAYS THAT WE COULD WORK TOGETHER IN THE FUTURE.
UM, SO EDF, UM, YOU SEE THIS SLIDE HERE, BUT, UM, THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND IT, WE ARE A VERY LARGE INTERNATIONAL NONPROFIT, UM, THAT IS TRYING TO MAKE CHANGE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT USING SCIENCE.
UM, EVERYTHING IS BASED ON SCIENCE AND PEOPLE.
UH, SO THOSE ARE WHAT EDF CONSIDERS TO BE IMPORTANT.
UM, I AM ONE OF THE FEW WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION WHO IS NOT AN ACTUAL SCIENTIST.
UM, AGAIN, MY BACKGROUND'S IN EDUCATION, UM, BUT THERE ARE TONS OF PEOPLE WHO WORK SPECIFICALLY IN COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, UM, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
SO THAT'S DEFINITELY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECES.
UM, I PERSONALLY MANAGE THE ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH COUNCIL.
IT'S A PROGRAM AT A FEW DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE HOUSTON AREA.
IT'S A EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM, AND WE TEACH THE STUDENTS EVERYTHING, UM, FROM CLIMATE CHANGE TO, UH, ABOUT THE AIR QUALITY INDEX, AND THEN OF COURSE ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.
RIGHT NOW WE ARE AT TWO YES PREP, UM, HIGH SCHOOLS.
WE HAVE BEEN AT PASADENA, UM, SEVERAL DIFFERENT PASADENA CAMPUSES, UM, AND SOME OF THE SMALLER CAMPUSES IN HISD.
I AM IN THE PROCESS OF WORKING ON PAPERWORK TO GET US, UM, GET AN EYC PROGRAM STARTED AT CARNEGIE VANGUARD HIGH SCHOOL FOR HOPEFULLY THIS SEMESTER.
SO I WANTED TO TALK TO YOU GUYS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.
UM, WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN? THE EPA DEFINES IT AS, UM, AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE ALL PEOPLE ENJOY THE SAME DEGREE OF PROTECTION FROM ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH HAZARDS.
AND THAT'S REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU LIVE, UM, REGARDLESS OF YOUR RACE, YOUR GENDER, YOUR INCOME, YOUR EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, IT'S THE IDEA THAT WE SHOULD ALL HAVE EQUAL PROTECTIONS UNDER THE LAW SO THAT WE HAVE A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT TO LIVE IN AND WORK IN.
UM, YOU'LL ALL, THERE ARE LOTS OF EXAMPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES.
UM, I'VE LISTED SOME OF THEM HERE.

UH, BUT ONE IN PARTICULAR, UH, I LIKE TO BE SPECIFIC ABOUT, UM, HOUSTON RELATED FACTS.
UM, BUT IN GENERAL, MOST COMMUNITIES THAT ARE NEAR IN INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES THAT ARE RELEASING TOXIC FUMES ARE, UM, BLACK OR BROWN COMMUNITIES.
AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES.
SO THAT IN ITSELF, UM, IS A BIG TESTAMENT.
UH, FOR EXAMPLE, IN HOUSTON, UH, GALENA PARK COMMUNITY IS 80% HISPANIC.
UM, AND ABOUT 40% OF THE RESIDENTS THERE LIVE WITHIN, UM, TWO MILES OF AN INDUSTRIAL FACILITY IN THE HARRISBURG AND MANCHESTER AREA.
UM, AGAIN, LARGELY HISPANIC, 90% OF THOSE RESIDENTS LIVE WITHIN ONE MILE OF AN INDUSTRIAL FACILITY.
SO THOSE ARE EXAMPLES, UM, OF ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES.
IT'S ALSO THE FACT THAT, UM, EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO, UM, UH, TO IN BE INVOLVED IN THE, UH, POLICYMAKING, UH, THAT'S GONNA DIRECTLY IMPACT THEIR LIVES.
UM, I'M SURE YOU'VE ALL HEARD OF THE FLINT WATER CRISIS.
THAT'S, THAT'S THE EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE.
UM, CAN ANYONE THINK OF ANY LOCAL EXAMPLES

THERE'S STUFF GOING ON EVERY DAY.YEAH, LIKE, UH, LIKE DURING, UH, HURRICANE HARVEY, THE WATERS NEAR, UH, I THINK IT WAS LIKE THE ELDRIDGE RESERVOIR, UH, LIKE ALL THOSE, LIKE NEIGHBORHOODS WERE JUST LIKE COMPLETELY DESTROYED BECAUSE OF LIKE, WELL, LIKE THE BUILDING STANDARDS AND LIKE CERTAIN COMMUNITIES, YOU KNOW, LIKE WHERE, LIKE THEY'RE RIGHT BY THE DAM AND THERE'S LIKE LITTLE TO NO FLOOD INSURANCE.
UM, MANY OF THOSE RESIDENTS AREN'T EVEN ELIGIBLE TO PURCHASE FLOOD INSURANCE.
SO WHAT DO YOU DO? BUT AT THE SAME TIME, UM, THEY ARE NOT FINANCIALLY ABLE TO JUST PACK UP AND MOVE.
SO WHAT DO YOU DO? THEY'RE KIND OF FORCED IN THIS SITUATION.
UM, CAN ANYONE GIMME ANOTHER EXAMPLE? UM, LIKE NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE THERE'S LESS TREES AND IT'S MORE CONCRETE AND LIKE PARKING LOT SURFACES, WHICH CAUSES LIKE HIGHER HEAT INDEXES IN THE SUMMER.
UM, I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YOU GUYS GET OUT INTO THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY, BUT LIKE THE GALENA PARK AREA THAT I MENTIONED, OR MANCHESTER, IF YOU GO OUT THERE, YOU'RE GONNA SEE A LOT MORE CONCRETE, VERY, UM, LITTLE GRASS.

UM, SPECIFICALLY CANCER IN CHILDREN.
SO, YOU KNOW, THIS IS IMPORTANT STUFF.
UM, SO I I'M REALLY EXCITED THAT SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE, ARE, UH, INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE.
SO THAT BRINGS ME TO ONE OF MY IDEAS.

UM, ANOTHER IS A CAMPUS OR A PARK CLEANUP.
