UM, THERE IS A PERMIT PARKING ZONE ON THE 1100 BLOCK OF ALEXANDER BECAUSE THE PARKING SITUATION IS HORRENDOUS SINCE LAURA OPENED. I LIVE IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE SUBJECT PROPERTY, AND THE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE IS THAT OVERFLOW PARKING ENDS UP IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE AND ON MY STREET. IT BLOCKS MY DRIVEWAY, IT BLOCKS MY TRASH CANS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE TRACK RECORD OF SO-CALLED INDEPENDENT MOTELS IN HOUSTON TELLS A VERY DIFFERENT STORY. MANY OF THESE ESTABLISHMENTS HAVE BECOME HUBS FOR ILLICIT ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SEX TRAFFICKING, DRUG USE, AND VAGRANCY. THIS NOT ONLY POSES A DIRECT THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF NEARBY RESIDENTS AND CHILDREN, BUT ALSO UNDERMINES THE HARD WORK WE HAVE PUT INTO IMPROVING THE AREA. A MOTEL OF THIS NATURE WOULD JEOPARDIZE THE POSITIVE PROGRESS THAT WE'VE MADE. I'D LIKE TO ADDRESS SEVERAL KEY CONCERNS. NUMBER ONE, THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. OUR BUILDING IS HOME TO SCHOOLS AND NONPROFITS THAT WORK TIRELESSLY TO UPLIFT AND EMPOWER FAMILIES. ALLOWING A MOTEL WITH A QUESTIONABLE PURPOSE AND LAYOUT SIMILAR TO OTHERS THAT HAVE PROMOTED UNSAFE [01:35:01] ACTIVITIES, WOULD EXPOSE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TO UNNECESSARY RISKS. NUMBER TWO, COMMUNITY IMPACT. THIS AREA ALREADY HAS A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF HOTELS, RANGING FROM BUDGET FRIENDLY TO HIGH END ACCOMMODATIONS, WHICH ADEQUATELY MEET THE NEEDS OF VISITORS. ADDING ANOTHER HOTEL OR MOTEL, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT LACKS A CLEAR, INCREDIBLE BRAND OR PURPOSE, WOULD OVERSATURATE THE MARKET WITHOUT ADDING MEANINGFUL VALUE TO THE COMMUNITY. NUMBER THREE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. WE HAVE WORKED DILIGENTLY TO ELEVATE THE QUALITY OF TENANCY IN THE AREA, ATTRACTING BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS. GO AHEAD AND WRAP IT UP IN A SENTENCE, PLEASE. THAT CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY. THIS WOULD PROVIDE A DETERRENT TO OUR EFFORTS. LASTLY, CRIME PREVENTION. INDEPENDENT MOTELS OFTEN LACK THE OVERSIGHT, SECURITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY THAT LARGER BRANDED HOTELS PROVIDE. THIS WOULD ENABLE TRAFFICKING AND OTHER ILLEGAL OPERATIONS TO OCCUR.
